How to Arrange Cookies on a Platter for Maximum Appeal

Cookie platters should always look as good as they taste. We eat with our eyes first, after all! Not the decorating type? Pick an elegant platter, grab your Cookie Squares and learn how to arrange a cookie tray that’ll impress your guests with Michel & Augustin!

First, Choose Your Cookies

No one wants a sparse cookie platter! Gather cookies in a range of flavors, sizes, shapes and colors. We recommend Michel & Augustin Cookie Squares, which come in three delicious flavors you and your guests will love: Chocolate and toasted hazelnut, Dark chocolate and a pinch of sea salt and Milk chocolate and melty caramel. Made with plenty of real butter, these French shortbread cookies will add flavor diversity to your platter and complement a variety of other cookies.

Add any cookies you’d like, from classic cookies and seasonal favorites to buttery treats fresh-out-of-the-oven, like our individually-wrapped Valentine’s Day cookies using our original shortbread cookie recipe. Just make sure your cookies are small – around one to two bites – so they’ll comfortably fit on the platter and guests can try multiple flavors.

How to Arrange a Cookie Tray

Your cookie arrangement is largely dependent on whether your tray is rectangular or round. The design also matters. Using a flat tray, or a tray without a rim, is ideal because it provides more surface area for your cookies.

How to Arrange Cookies on a Round Platter

If you’re using a round tray, one arrangement option is to radiate cookies out from the center like rays of the sun or flower petals. Place the largest cookies in the center, then create your rays with the smaller cookies. Our tip for how to arrange a round cookie tray: vary height and stack some of the cookies for added visual interest!

You could also arrange the cookies in a spiral. Working your way out from the center, start layering cookies into a spiral on your platter, either alternating cookie treats or grouping flavors together – it’s up to you.

A final arrangement is creating a rainbow or half-moon shape. Start by layering the largest cookies along the curve of your tray. Continue this process, working in order of cookie size or flavor.

How to Arrange a Square/Rectangular Cookie Tray

Using a square or rectangular tray? Stack your cookies by type in a straight line, either lengthwise or widthwise depending on the size of your platter. Strategically place medium and large cookies at the back or center, adding small cookies to add visual interest.

If you’re looking to go wild (we know you are!), arrange cookies into fun designs or shapes – diagonals, zig-zags, maze shapes, etc.

Ready to put these tips for how to arrange a cookie tray in action? Oui oui! We recommend not assembling your cookie platter until it’s ready to be served. You want your cookies to remain as fresh as possible for maximum appeal *and* enjoyment!
